In the past years, the United States and Russia have been having close encounters. The number of encounters have ramped up dramatically since the Cold War. These close encounters often occur in the Baltic Sea. Due to these skirmishes one can wonder what could happen in the future between these two powerful countries. A spokesman from the Pentagon named Jeff Davis stated, “There have been repeated incidents over the past year where Russian aircraft have come close enough to other air and sea traffic to raise serious safety concerns.” Last Tuesday, two Russian fighter jets flew within 30 feet of the USS Donald Cook, which is one of America’s most technologically advanced naval ship. The USS Cook was sailing 70 miles from the Kaliningrad, a Russian military port.
If a Russian pilot lost focus for a split second and accidently hit a U.S ship, a grim war could follow. The Russian’s decision to do such a thing aggravated many U.S officials including John Kerry. Secretary of State John Kerry warned Russia to be careful saying that next time the Russian fighter jets could be shot down. There have been various opinions regarding the U.S’s decision not to fire at the two jets. Multiple military officials agreed with the conservative decision and said the USS Cook demonstrated “extreme professionalism” and “extreme restraint”.
Due to these constant unsafe aerial maneuvers performed by Russia, one may ask what is Vladimir Putin’s motive to do so? One conclusion is that Putin is playing domestic politics. With these risky actions, Putin is able to show the world that Russia is powerful and deserves respect. Additionally, Putin exhibits that Russia is not afraid to deal with many countries including the U.S. This recent risky behavior definitely stirred further tension up between the two international juggernauts. Looking into the future can be quite scary and intriguing. If these daunting acts persist, one can only ask if there will be bloodshed in this conflicting facade.
