Is The Roman Catholic Church Becoming More Progressive?

A 256-page “apostolic exhortation” called the “Amoris Laetitia” or “The Joy of Love” has been released by Pope Francis that changes its approach and views on the concept of divorce within the Roman Catholic Church. He also urged priests around the world to be more accepting of gays and lesbians and other people living in what the church considers “irregular” situations. But even the Pope’s progressive way of thinking is beginning to “update” some of the church’s older methods and ways of teaching.Overall there has been little changes made to the ideas on abortion and contraception.

The Roman Catholic Church hierarchy that has remained in placed since 1059 and is a not only a main factor Church, but also is the head of the 1.2 billion Roman Catholics worldwide. Pope Francis was elected as the 266th Pope by the Roman Catholic Church in March of 2013. Born in Argentina, he has previously served as a cardinal, the President of the Bishops Conference of Argentina and as an archbishop. In the year of 2013 Pope Francis was named Person of the Year by Times Magazine due to his dedication in helping the poor and marginalized people. Within the past three years, the Pope has made a name for himself in a different manner than the Popes of the past due to his more progressive nature and desire to connect to individual. He has not only recognized new ideas such as climate change, combating poverty, protecting nature, the gender pay gap and the personal acceptance of gays who seek out God saying “If a person is gay and seeks God and has good will, who am I to judge.” These things set him apart by a longshot from any former Pope.

Yet with a desire to change the ways of the Roman Catholic Church, he seems to be getting mixed feelings from both Catholics and Non-Catholics. While many Catholics like his views compared to the church’s own views, below is a chart showing not the a Roman Catholic view on him but people who are unaffiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. Overall, it is the Pope’s progressive view and desire to change the Roman Catholic Church current views and the support he is receiving from the 1.2 billion religious followers. There could be changes within the church that could have never been seen as possible in the history of the Roman Catholic Church..
